about

Isa Luige Lugu / Bourrée de Porte

Isa Luige Lugu (The Story Of The Father’s Swan)
The title refers to a small horn instrument that makes a similar sound to a swan. Collected from Mihkel Toom (1873-1958, Tori, Estonia), Alan learned this labajalg from Estonian flautist Katariina Tirmaste.

Bourrée de Porte
Collected from fiddler Baptiste Porte (1905-1979, Corrèze, France). The story is that Porte couldn't remember the B part, and hummed a couple of bits and pieces, but the A part was such a banger that the collector (Jean Pierre Champeval) constructed the B part from the bits and pieces, and the tune as we play it was popularized from that.

Aerialists combine prog-trad compositions and re-imaginings of traditional material in a deft balancing act of new and old. The music is ethereal yet precise, technical yet visceral, and every song feels like a new beginning.

They garnered a 2019 JUNO Award nomination for Group Manoeuvre, and 2020's Canadian Folk Music Award-winning Dear Sienna digs deeper into their distinctive neo-folk sound.
